Example #1 of cataracts (natural lens clarity loss)

An intraocular lens (IOL) is an optical lens implant with refractive (focusing) properties.

The human eye has a natural lens that over time loses its clarity. A lens that has lost clarity is called a cataract.

Example of degraded vision from cataract formation

When a cataract results in loss of clarity images appear discolored, defocused and in advance cases the eye with the cataract cannot see at all.

Westchester Eye Surgeons specialize in  numerous treatment options – particularly surgery for cataracts.

One popular treatment option is intraocular lenses, so we thought we would offer a quick overview of what intraocular lenses are, how they work and the different types of lenses available.

What is an Intraocular Lens

Cataract Symptoms - What does a cataract look like?

An intraocular lens or IOL is designed to replace the natural human lens after a cataract operation.

Once a cataract is removed the power of the IOL replenishes most of the eye’s focusing properties.

An IOL may be implanted either in front of or behind the pupil. In some cases the IOL needs to be sutured within the eye.
